I have shelves that are brown in color. They are about chest high. There is about four shelves between the one book shelf.
Thank you for your ideas and I'll give it a try.
I did get rid of some books down in the basement that I had not look at for awhile and that felt good and release some space.
Does staking on top of each other give more space? I do have some other books that I have brought that are cluttering up my coffee table but I read these book on a regular basices. How do I made it look less cluttery around this area?
I also have toys for my grandchildren around this area and this is always a mess because it is a small space. I am going to open up this area of my front room so we will have more sitting room but I want to keep the toys and books there, too.
Any ideas?

Ideas for organizing your books by: Carmeng
Books are the fun and easiest to organize. Although your descripotion did not say what the size of bookshelves, color, or material your bookshelves are made of, I am going with two tall shelves. Regarless of the size, color, material or condition, the concept is still the same.
First, do look for books that you do want to release and drop them off at your local charity or give to a library. Place the books you want to keep on the floor, as you organize--this is a great visual. Decide what category they belong; photography, cooking, etc.
Once you have all the books by category or subject matter, look at the size of the tallest books in the category. If you have shelves that you can adjust for size do that now. If not lay the big books flat on the shelf and stack neatly. Another tip. Try placing your tallest at the bottom of a shelf and books most used towards the top shelf or at your eye level.
The remaining books can be placed in the remaing shelves by category. Again, not knowing how tall your bookshelves, are, the same theory applies. The last hint is to add a soft touch to the books shelves by adding a few small accessories such as family pictures in silver or gold frames, candles, pretty bottles or items you love to collect. My last suggestion is to add a third shelf of the same height and color, or choose a smaller shelf of the same, material and color and place it between the two larger shelves. You may think about adding a large mirror above the small shelf for a WOW effect.
