Chronic Disorganization: There Is Help!

Chronic Disorganization (CD) is worse than a little disorganized but not to the level of hoarding. It has been around for a long time. The definition of CD is when a person is not just severly disorganized, but disorganized to the point where all efforts to get organized have failed. Whether with help or not, all efforts to get organized have reverted back to the original state.

Chronically Disorganized people can stay organized anywhere from a week to a month, but for whatever reason everything collapses. Being on this type of organizing rollacoaster can lead to depression, and confusion. Most CD people do not understand why they cannot stay organized.

Even though it is a challenge to stay organized, a CD person can stay organized with help on a ongoing basis. This is a lifelong battle, but with help can be mananged and won.

Causes of CD

Judith Kolberg, a leading expert about Chronic Disorganization, believes that CD has to do with how a person learns. With solutions that embrace these needs she believes a CD person can be organized. Her insights and solutions into Chronic Disorganization have helped me to help my clients with their CD needs.

Although CD is dominant in adulthood, it can be attributed to going back into childhood also. My mother happens to be CD. She was a very neat and organized child because of my Grandmother, but when she got older I think she rebelled because of that and the rebellion just has never stopped. She would like to stay organized and is organized at work, but home is a different issue. Everything reverts back to its original state if I don't stay on top of it with her. That is why it is so important for CD people to have a maintenance plan when they get organized. With a maintenance plan you can keep on top of your tendencies to revert back to old ways.

Solutions to CD

Some solutions to CD include:

  • Structure - Have a structured plan of action. Get creative in how you get organized.
  • Maintenance & Follow-Up - Have a maintenance plan and a way for follow-up to keep you accountable.
  • Professional Help or A Friend - Again, this just helps you to have someone to keep you accountable and to help you get organized.
